Sankata Devi is known in Kashi (Varanasi) as one of the most powerful temples in the entire city. Sankata Ji as she is called, is located high above the Sankata Ghat in the labyrinthine lanes of the city. Sankata Devi means "Goddess of Dangers", for she is the one who vanquishes dangers for her devotees. Sankata Devi was originally a Matrika, one of the mothers. In Puranic Stories she is called Vikat Matrika, the "Fierce Mother". Sankata Devi is a self-manifested goddess and has ten hands. Maa Sankata is also known as " Sankat Nashini " or the one who cure all the problems . It is said that after Sati Mata's death Lord Shiva worshiped Sankata Devi and devi who is non other than Shakti herself blessed him to be born again as his wife as Parvati . It is also believed that Pandavas also worshiped Mother Sankata here and Devi fulfilled their wishes. त्रैशल डमरुञ्य खड्गविधृतां चक्राभयाद्यां पराम् ॥१॥
सङ्कटा प्रथम नाम द्वितीयं विजया तथा ।
तृतीय कामदा प्रोक्तं चतुर्थम् दु:खहारिणी ॥२॥
सर्वाणी पञ्चमं नाम षष्ठं कात्यायनी तथा ।
सप्तम भीमनयना सर्वरोगहताष्टमम् ॥३॥
नामाष्टकमिद पुण्यं त्रिसन्ध्य श्रद्धयान्वित: ।
य: पठेत् पाठयेद्वापि नरो मुच्येत सङ्कटात् ॥४॥
॥इति श्री सङ्कटास्तोत्र: सम्पूर्ण ॥
