Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam ( श्री वेंकटेश सुप्रभातम् ) with meaning

Apr 09 2017 0 Comments Tags: stotram, Suprabhatam, Tirupati Balaji, Venkateshwara, Vishnu

Sri Venkateshwara or Balaji, is a form of the Lord Vishnu only.  Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam is a series of hymns written in poetic form, in 1430 A.D,by Pratvada Bhayankara Sri Anantacharya (also known as Annangaracharyar, and P B Annan), the Ramanujacharya of Kachipuram. This work of poetic art is meant for singing praises of Lord Sri Venkateswara while waking him up early in the morning, during the Suprabhata Seva at the holy Tirumala Temple, everyday. However, according to the Markandeya Purana - one of the Ashtadasa Puranas written by Sage Veda Vyasa – the last four stanzas of Sri Venkateswara Sthotram were actually written and composed by Sage Markandeya.

Sage Markandeya as part of his Vaidika Dharma wanted to go on a pilgrimage to the most sacred place in this universe and also wanted to offer his prayers to the most powerful God. Since he was not sure about who such a God is and what such a place on this earth is,he requested Garuda, the celestial vehicle of Lord Vishnu to offer him some guidance in this regard. Garuda smiled and said, “..There’s no place in these fourteen worlds more sacred than Venkatachalam and there’s no God more powerful than Lord Venkateswara. My Lord Vishnu is residing there on Venkatachalam, in the form of a stone idol, and you may go there and offer your prayers to that greatest of all Gods called Sri Venkateswara.” Markandeya immediately rushed to Venkatachalam, the current day Tirumala, and starting with a holy dip in Kapila Teertham, also called Chakra Teertham, he went about bathing in Indra Teertham, Vishvaksena Teertham, Sankha Teertham, Agni Teetham, Sapta Rishi Teertham and a few more sacred Teerthams that are there on the Venkatachalam hill shrine (Teertham means a sacred bathing ghat). After completing his bathing in as many sacred Teerthams as possible, Sage Markandeya ended up speechless with an inexplicable feeling of joy and ecstasy. It was during that exalted state of devotion that he spontaneously recited the most popular stanzas of Sri Venkateswara Sthotram that we all recite today in praise of Lord Sri Venkateswara.
