Kamakhaya Devi

Kamakhya is an important Tantric goddess that evolved in the Himalayan hills. She is closely identified with Kali and Maha Tripura Sundari. According to the Tantric texts (Kalikapurana Stotra, Yoginitantram) that are the basis for her worship at the Kamakhya temple, a 16th century temple in the Kamrup district of Assam. The temple remains one of the most important Shakta temples and Hindu pilgrimage sites in the world.

Kamakhya is a powerful and unique Divine Mother. Kamakhya, the Great Mother, Goddess whose origins go back to the ancient matrifocal tribes of Northeast India. She is associated strongly with the Dasha Mahavidyas, the Ten Great Wisdom Goddesses. These fierce and beautiful devis (goddesses) are both complete unto themselves, as well as emanations of Mahadevi herself. Kamakhya is uniquely identified with two Mahavidyas, both Kali and Shodashi/Maha Tripurasundari. She is both ferocious and benign, light and dark, she transcends and defies duality. She is Mahamaya, and takes on all forms of the Divine – thus any deity may be worshipped as a form of Her. She is the source of all creation, the sustainer of all living things, and the destructive, transformative force to which all things return.

Kamakhaya devi is known as the yielder of all desires. Kamakhaya devi Temple at Guwahati, Assam is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. The yoni ("womb," or "source") of Sati is said to have fallen to earth at this location, and the Kamakhya temple was said to have been constructed on this spot. There is no image of Shakti here. Within a corner of a cave in the temple, there is a sculptored image of the Yoni of the Goddess, which is the object of reverence. A natural spring keeps the stone moist.

This is one of the oldest stories of the origin of Kamakhya temple:

Lord Brahma created the whole world. After the creation he became proud and thought himself as the supreme creative force. Jaganmata Mahakali noticed this. She decided to teach a lesson to Brahma and created a demon named Kesi. As soon as born, the demon ran towards Brahma to swallow him up. Brahma feared. He went to Lord Vishnu and asked him to save. The demon built a city named Kesi pura, and began to harass the world.

Vishnu told Brahma to worship Mahakali. Brahma realized his mistake and prąyed Mahakali. The Goddess satisfied and burned the demon in to ashes by Hum kara. She told to Brahma that he should create a hill from the ashes of Kesi, with full of edible grass for cattle, and his sin would be reduced in proportion to the grasses grazed by the cattle. She created Yoni circle out of her own creative force and told to Brahma to worship it. But, Brahma couldn’t see it because of his sin. He did a big Tapasya and brought down a luminous light from the sky and placed it in the Yoni circle created by the Goddess. Then after, all the gods are worshiping Jaganmata (Kamakhya Mahakali).
