Janeu, also called the sacred tread, has three threads, each one of which, in turn, is made up of eight cotton yarns. The three threads are tied together at one place with seven granthis (knots). The knots are tied and purified by repeating Gayatri mantra. The Janeu hangs from the left shoulder, crosses the chest from left to right and hangs down up to right side of the waist. It enhances purity and gives long life and divine bliss. Janeu is a consecrated thread that is worn generally by every Hindu Brahmin of India. This auspicious thread of 'Janeu' suggests the development of a male, from a young boy to a man. It is believed that a boy cannot be surmised as "Dvija" (twice born) until he goes through the janeu ceremony. Besides the Brahmins, Janeo thread is also worn by the Kshatriyas and Vaishyas. The type of Janeu is different for different caste groups or sects of people of India . Symbolically janeu stands for the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Others interpreted it as symbolical of Mahasarasvati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali. Many see it as being related with past, present and future deeds of an individual.
